Can I use my smartwatch overseas?

In principle, a smart watch should be able to operate in any part of the world provided the supported network of the watch is available in the region overseas. For example if its a 2G network supported watch, it should be available in the place of interest and 3G or 4G respectively. So can I use my smartwatch overseas?. Definitely Yes

Now the complicated part , the frequencies. You would need to check the frequencies the watches can connect to, make sure these frequencies are available in the country you will be travelling to, and if you’re going to be using a local SIM card with the watch for example, you have to make sure the SIM card provider (the network there) supports the frequencies used by the watch.

For example let’s assume the watch connects to the frequencies we use here in NZ which are 900MHz and 1800MHz for Vodafone. If you’re travelling to Zimbabwe for example they use GSM 900Mhz and 1800MHz. When you’re roaming , your phone will connect to one of the networks that works with the Vodafone frequencies. That should be ok to continue using the smart watch whilst travelling there.

If for example you chose to buy a locally supported 2G network simcard, you would need to check the frequencies of the network you’re buying the SIM card to use with. Either way it can be a bit problematic if the device connects to 900MHz only, and the destination/service provider you go to supports 1800Mhz only such as Indonesia.

GSM Network Frequencies

You can use the drop down list on the following page for some indicative help about the frequencies used in the different countries. We however recommend to check the overseas service providers websites for more accuracy:

As an added measure for your peace of mind while travelling it can be helpful indeed, yet ensuring it will work everywhere you go, with the different networks and frequencies, and the varying coverage in some locations, can be the challenging part.

In addition, it would also be important to remember to change the se tracker connection server from Asia and Pacific for New Zealand to the respective server in the country of visit.

This can easily be accomplished by sending the following text to the watch sim number depending on which region you have visited:

SMS Commands

To do this, send an SMS command to the number of the watch.
Pay attention, the command should be written exactly in this form – without spaces, save all the characters.

Europe and African Region

pw,123456,ip,52.28.132.157,8001#

The command will switch the watch to SeTracker Europe.
